#3 · Jan 21, 2016 I've owned mine for probably 3 years now and I love it. 2005 to 2008 was the first version of the 2.5 5 cylinder which apparently it has a timing chain problem but I think it's all in how often you maintenance the engine.
Yes, the VW 2.5 is a 5-cylinder engine. It has been praised for its smooth and quiet operation, as well as its durability. However, like any engine, it can experience some common problems, such as ignition coil failure, vacuum pump leaks, and N80 valve failure. As per the recordings and the field data, the VW 2.5 engine will last up to 200000 miles, or even more with proper and regular maintenance. On average, the longevity of a VW 2.5 engine is up to 280,000 miles. A new Volkswagen Jetta‘s quality and condition will allow it to last at least 150,000 miles. The 2.5 engines have garnered a reputation for their longevity, having service life between 150,000 and 200,000 miles in most cases. It’s important to note, however, that they do need more regular oil replacements because of their higher oil consumption rate. From the VW techs and Indy guys I know, the 2.5 has been a very reliable engine. Big oil sump, pretty easy on oil, and in its current form, not too many weak links. I have a feeling if I keep it long enough, my 2012 will fall apart before the 2.5 really gives me trouble. KFnbD.
